meters high on the east side of the mountain. The monastery was founded by monks of the monastery of Ripoll in 1030. It was build for the Holy Virgin Maria.

Unfortunately, a big part of the monastery was destroyed by the army of Napoleon in 1811. Rapidly after this destruction there was started with the reconstruction of the monastery. But during the Spanish Civil War, the monastery was again the victim of demolishing. In 1925, it was totally renovated by the Spanish architect Josep Puig I Cadafalch. Unfortunately, the monastery lost its architectural value by this renovation. But despite that, the Montestir of Montserrat attracts more than a million visitors every year and is definitely worth a visit.

You can reach the monastery from the train station by mountain train or cable car.  A great Catalan poet called the mountain “The miracle of Catalonia”. The name Montserrat mountain means literally the cut mountain and that name fits very well, because the limestone rocks are distorted by erosion over the years. Nowhere else in Europe you will find this unique landscape. Monterrat is also unique in its flora, there are more than 1500 different sorts of plants. This is about half of all the different sorts of plants in whole Catalonia. The highest peak of the mountain is Sant Jeroni and has a height of 1236 meters.

The monastery, the churches and chapels, the museum, the image of the ‘Black Madonna’, the young choir, which is all situated on the Montserrat mountain, and the mountain in general make sure that this place is one of the most tourist places of Catalonia.
